We civil society organizations and trade unions, fighting for peace, democracy and social justice world-wide, wishes to express its solidarity with Protect the Future, Hungarian civil society organisations, trade unions and communities participating in the demonstration called for December 15, 2007 and the strike action beginning on December 17, 2007 against the privatisation of the Hungarian National Health Insurance!
Health care and insurance are public services and as such an equal access to these services constitutes a fundamental right, not a privilege! As the experiences have shown both in Northern countries and the Global South the privatisation of public services, including health care related sectors, have lead to disastrous consequences for local communities. Health care and public services cannot be entrusted to private investors whose overriding concern is profit, not people.
In solidarity with the Hungarian movements, we demand therefore that the Hungarian Parliament does not endorse the bill, which represents a further step in the privatisation of the national health insurance system, and it opens a democratic public debate on the reorganisation of the Hungarian health care sector with the aim to guarantee equal access to health insurance.
