Palestinian Parliamentarians Form Committee to Investigate Death of Prisoner in Ramallah Jail

Monday 25 February 2008, by Palestinian National Initiative

Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi MP, Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative, and four other MPs announced the establishment of a committee to investigate the death of Majd Barghouthi on Friday 22 February. Dr. Barghouthi declared “we must work to overcome Palestinian divisions for fear they will become a justification to infringe on Palestinian civil liberties”.

The imam Majd Barghouthi from Kobar in the West Bank, who had been arrested in his home by the Palestinian Authority on February 14, was found dead in his cell Friday 22. He had not been legally charged during his detention.

The committee members are: Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, Palestinian National Initative; Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, Third Way; Bassam Salihi, Palestine People’s Party; Khalida Jarrar, Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine; Qais Abdelkarim, Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

The committee issued a statement offering condolences to the family of the deceased and affirming that it will investigate the facts and circumstances of the death of Majd Barghouthi. The committee also warned about the seriousness of the political arrests in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and stressed the need to respect the rule of law and the fundamental freedoms and human rights of the Palestinian people.

Dr. Barghouthi explained that Hamas and Fatah were not represented in the committee in order to ensure the integrity of the investigation. He insisted that “Palestinian society must be governed through democratic principles and the rights of all Palestinians must be respected”.
