Mustafa Barghouthi on the Latest Invasion of Rafah

Sunday 10 June 2007

Palestinian Information Minister, Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, slammed on Saturday the Israeli invasion into Rafah, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, and considered it an additional Israeli response to the truce proposal by the Palestinian factions.

Dr. Barghouthi stated that soldiers rounded all males aged 16-50 after breaking into dozens of houses on Friday at night and Saturday at dawn, interrogated them and kidnapped several residents.

Soldiers also broke into dozens of houses, violently searched them causing considerable damage to their properties and furniture.

Dr. Barghouthi said that “this is yet another Israeli crime against the Palestinian people”, and added that this invasion proves that Israel is placing obstacles in front any peace initiative in the area, and is persistent to continue its military escalation in the occupied territories.

“This, without any doubt, proves that Israel does not want to be a partner in peace”, he added, “this attack proves that Israel wants to foil the truce, this invasion in considered an Israeli response to the Palestinian initiative of a parallel truce”.

It is worth mentioning that several resistance groups in Rafah exchanged fire with the invading forces as the army was bulldozing lands and agricultural areas.
